Chapter Sixteen

A FEW HOURS LATER, it was after midnight, and Seth had still not returned. Gage was getting worried. The snow had stopped and the moon had risen, lighting up the ice- and snow-covered terrain like a spotlight. It also starkly lit up the slowly rotating obelisk hovering in the sky over Clearwater. It was still dormant, but the Fae Nexus connection stability was slowly rising. The obelisk would eventually light back up, bringing more trouble to their doorstep.

A gleam of moonlight reflected through the trees, and Gage brought the group to a stop. “I think I saw something.”

He cautiously pushed his way into the thick underbrush, ready to fire off a [Lightning Bolt] at anything that moved. Peri followed right behind him, holding Hal at the ready. On the other side of the trees he found a broad clearing with an old pickup truck in the center, sitting next to the creek. It had all the curves of a vintage pinup girl, with a huge arching hood, bulging wheel wells, and a flatbed with rotted wooden slats for the sides. The doors were blocked by thorny blackberry bushes, so Gage carefully pulled himself up into the bed and peered through the back window into the cab. It was amazingly intact, and even the old knobs that controlled the heater were still there.

“Now that’s a truck,” Shirrana said as she came through the trees with her grandma close behind.

“That’s incredible,” Annie said. “Looks like a ’42 Ford.”

“I think it’s the one in the picture we found of Great-Grandpa Malcolm,” Gage said.

“We must be getting close.” Peri hopped up next to him to check it out.

“Hang on, the keys are still in it,” Gage said. He stuck his arm in through the broken window of the cab and grabbed the keys from a shallow slot in the dashboard. They were on a metal keychain that said, “Genuine Coca-Cola.”

Shirrana said, “Well, unless you think you can get her started up again, let’s keep going.”

Reluctantly, Gage hopped down. “Those old trucks were tough,” he said. “It might surprise you.”

“I think that might take more magic than we’ve got, at least for now,” Annie replied.

A set of twin tracks led into the creek, which was wide and shallow, and then out the other side. They were heavily overgrown, barely visible through the leaves and brush, but they wound their way up the hillside toward a line of rugged cliffs that rose above the trees less than a mile away.

“That’s got to be it,” Gage said.

“I’ll leave Seth a sign so he knows which way we went.” Peri took her hatchet and cut a blaze into a tree at eye level.

Gage said, “Well, if this doesn’t go to the speakeasy, I say wherever it leads, we find a spot to settle in for the night. I don’t know about you guys, but we’ve been up for two days straight, and have hiked more miles than any sane person ought to. It’s time for some shuteye.”

“Agreed,” Annie said.
